Peak District – Kinder Scout – Jacob’s Ladder & The Official Summit

Official Summit area, the false cairn is pictured with the Official Grass mound summit in the background It's always great to return to an old favourite, walking routes along the southern edge of Kinder Scout is where I first cut my teeth with proper navigation. It is along this edge that my friends and I first set foot on this great mountain, longer ago than I care to recollect. I remember the day well, we had camped at the Field Head Campsite, the weather was absolutely terrible but we got out our map and compass and headed off on to the plateau. I don't really have favourites, as having them means you like somewhere or something less. I do however have a route which I can say I have favoured more than others. The route Read more [...]

Peak District – Kinder Scout – Hayfield Route March 2010

I've just got back from a fantastic wintery walk on the Kinder Plateau, I did the usual route from Bowden Bridge at Hayfield. The weather today was absolutely fantastic, beautiful sunshine, fresh wintery air and still plenty of snow left up top. I set off from Bowden Bridge and headed up to William Clough via the Reservoir. The snow line was 50 metres or so below Ashop Head and it made the final accent up onto the Plateau very interesting. A guy descending resulted to sliding down as the Read more [...]
